The Single Side of Life ... The Upside

Written by Lindsay K. of Love Kudos

I've thought about it, whined about it, and cried about being single.  Now I am choosing to be my own devil's advocate and talk about why being single is actually pretty great and should be enjoyed to the fullest. (I have my independence; ability to chose whenever I want to go to sleep or eat dinner, and have the benefit of dating whoever I want.) The expression, grass is always greener on the other side, possess some truth as indicated by all my co-workers and married friends. They want to live vicariously through me and constantly come to me to hear my latest dating adventures or stories from my downtown outings with friends.  Your single life adventures let's you really appreciate when you finally do meet that person you want to spend your free time with.

Harold, a 32 year old says, "I agree, although being single does suck, I have found that it is better than being with the wrong person. I was almost married a few years ago and am lucky to have figured out she was not the one for me before we got too far into the planning process. That experience taught me a lot about myself and what I really want in life. As much as I look forward to being married and having children, I want to make sure I'm really doing it for the right reasons. Being single does make you appreciate a good relationship more, though."

Reasons to celebrate life as a "Singleton":
  • Freedom of being able to do what you want, when you want to do it, and with whom you want.
  • Adventures in the bedroom never get boring.
  • Free time to read a book, go to the gym, or learn a new skill, like salsa dancing.
  • You can save money. (If you don't go out too much.)
  • There's room for the cat and the dog in bed and they don't snore, fart, or ask you to move over in the middle of the night.
  • No in-laws or future in-laws to worry about.
  • Stories to gab to your friends about.
  • Having your own social identity
  • You can be perfect, since there's no one to point out your flaws.
  • Nobody get's hurt.
  • You get to flirt with anyone.
  • You can travel to exotic places with friends or a friend with benefits. (Road trip!)
  • You can post whatever pictures you want on Facebook and don't have to worry about a jealous boyfriend or girlfriend.

Lauren K. says, "Don't give up looking for that special someone to enhance your already full, exciting life. Get out there. I believe that there are multiple people that are right for each person. If you close your heart off, you will miss great opportunities to meet some amazing people and possibly your beshert. Beshert, in Yiddish, means your perfect match, your soul mate, your destiny."

I agree. In fact I have the opposite problem since I never really have those "being single sucks" moments. Part of my life plans include having kids and being married so obviously I can't be single for that but as far as my day to day I don't think I ever feel I NEED a romantic someone else in my life or ever feel lonely that I'm single. I am a very independent person and enjoy my single life, so if anything it raises the bar for a future girlfriend to make it worth wanting to give up some of the benefits of being single for them. Though I consider this a good thing since so many people tend to marry or date the wrong person to merely fill a void or not be single any more.

I feel 100% complete as a single. This is a good thing I feel because then I never feel as if I have a void or missing something. That way when I do find the person I want to spend the rest of my life with she is adding to an already wonderful life instead of filling a void in an incomplete life. This not only is healthier as a single person but I think this allows you to be a better partner as well if you come to the table already 100%.
