Fatties, Flies, and Botox

Written by Lindsay K. of the Love Kudos duo

I don't like to admit it, but we live in a superficial world.  There have been televisions shows like "Dating in the Dark," in which a couple's first date is in complete darkness.  The purpose is to eliminate the physical aspect of the initial get to know you stage.  Unfortunately, as we age, our metabolism slows down and if we don't  increase our physical exercise and/or lower our caloric intake, we will become all to familiar with the freshman fifteen or twenty, thirty or forty, etc.  And how can we maintain that taut, glowing skin, full of collagen that is so appealing to our suitors? Unless you resort to botox, resilin, or swear off the sun from the age of 16, you are bound to succumb to having wrinkly, sagging skin.

Is this happening to you?

Aaryn,* one of our blog readers, recently said, "When I had an athletic build, I couldn't shew the flies off of me fast enough!  Now that I am fat, I am basically overlooked by everyone."  Even though he has a girlfriend, he mentioned that it even when he goes out with friends, people seldom look him in the eyes or shake his hand. Lauren says, "This sounds a little extreme and does not sound completely accurate. However, it may feel that way to Aaryn in his alternate reality."

Why being heavy is not the best:
  1. Makes you look older than your real age
  2. Unhealthy
  3. Sloppy looking (clothes don't fit the right way)
  4. Tend to have low self-esteem
  5. Tend to lose motivation to get involved or do activities

Physical traits aren't only used when selecting a mate, but in other aspects of life, such as in the work force. Lauren says, "In the workplace, heavier people are discriminated against as well. Sometimes heavier set people are passed up for promotions because of their physical appearance. I think that if you have a job that requires you to be attractive and fit, then you should try to maintain that look through healthy means. Although it may not be listed in the required job duties to be fit, many companies are encouraging wellness. The same goes for relationships. A few pounds gained or lost during the course of a relationship is perfectly natural, but excessive yo-yoing in either direction is truly unhealthy and can have a detrimental effect on your sex life, as well as other aspects of your lifestyle. I try to watch what I eat and exercise on a regular basis. I value fitness and want a partner that feels the same way."

The intention of this blog is not to make you feel bad about yourself, but to encourage you to get back out there and try to improve your looks and overall health. The end of January is when people are known for giving up on their New Year's resolutions. Stay true to your goals; whether they are physical, financial, social, and/or emotional ones. A close friend of Lauren's recently lost weight through the Special K diet and it has been a major boost to her self-esteem. When you are in great shape, you are confident in yourself and it shows in everything that you do.

I recognize the struggles of how hard it is to make a change in your life. Anyone who has ever tried to lose weight knows that it's really hard to lose weight. Habits are hard to change.  I've been told to that I would look better if I just lost 10 pounds.  Lose ten pounds sounds easy, right?  I've counted calories, spent money for a trainer, and put my time in at the gym. Well, it is a work in progress. If you are one of those people who has some extra poundage or unhappy with those crow's feet and deep forehead lines, then there are resources available to help you.  A membership to Weight Watchers and/or 24 Hour Fitness, or a visit to your doctor is just a phone call or click away. I really feel like we can't completely defy aging, but we can try to look good throughout our lives. If we let ourselves go, we can only blame ourselves and the choices that we make.
